A striking property that distinguishes enamel from other mineralized tissues is______________?

Select your answer for: A striking property that distinguishes enamel from other mineralized tissues is______________?
Show answer

Answer: D. Most of organic component is lost during mineralization

Explanation

Unlike other mineralized tissues, enamel undergoes extensive maturation where the vast majority of its organic matrix is degraded. Proteolytic enzymes break down amelogenin and enamelin proteins, allowing mineral crystals to grow and pack tightly. This unique maturation process leaves mature enamel with only about one percent organic content by weight. Enamel mineralization begins with a soft organic matrix that is gradually replaced by precipitating hydroxyapatite crystals. Bone, dentin, and cementum retain significant amounts of organic collagen matrix throughout the lifespan of the tissue. Enamel maturation occurs during the late bell stage and continues right up until tooth eruption takes place.

Enamel actually possesses a remarkably low percentage of organic matrix once maturation is fully completed. Incremental lines are present in enamel, but they do not distinguish enamel from other mineralized tissues. Enamel has zero reparative capacity because its formative cells degenerate before the tooth ever erupts.

Select your answer for: The thinnest epithelial layer in the oral cavity is located within the____________?
Show answer

Answer: D. Sublingual mucosa (floor of mouth)

The sublingual mucosa located in the floor of the mouth is lined by a very thin, non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Its lack of a protective keratinized surface layer and minimal connective tissue thickness...

Select your answer for: Perikymata, the fine ridges visible on the facial surfaces of canines, result from_____________?
Show answer

Answer: C. Normal development

Perikymata are normal developmental surface features produced by rhythmic enamel deposition during amelogenesis. The cyclical activity of ameloblasts creates incremental growth lines that emerge on the outer enamel surfa...

Select your answer for: The variety of dentin produced prior to root completion is designated as______________?
Show answer

Answer: C. Circum pulpal dentin

Circumpulpal dentin makes up the vast majority of the tooth and forms prior to complete root formation. It surrounds the central pulp chamber and continues to be deposited as the primary dentin layer. This bulk layer pro...
